When Joshua grows up

When you sit down with Joshua, one of the first things you’ll learn is how much he loves to sing and write music.  He will gladly rap for you an original song, and trust us, the boy has talent!  When he grows up, he wants to be a gospel singer.

Joshua joined Fountain of Life Community School two years ago as a 4th grader.  When he joined, he didn’t know how to read.  Unfortunately, this is the reality for most children in Ng’ombe.  They may be going to school every day, but never learn how to read while there.

Thankfully, Fountain of Life does things differently.  Through their daily reading program, the teachers are committed to helping every child learn to read and giving them access to books and special time for reading.  It was through this program that Joshua learned how to read.  And now it’s his favorite thing about school.  Right now, his class is reading the Wizard of Oz every Friday and Joshua can recount everything that’s happened in the book so far.

One of the other things Joshua will tell you about is the school’s GROW Program.  Every 5th grade student has the chance to participate in this special character building program.  Through the lessons, Joshua learned about God, self-confidence, and honesty.  He admits that he used to steal and wasn’t an honest boy, but through the class, he’s turned his young life around.

Talking with Joshua is an inspiration.  Only 12 years old and he’s able to celebrate what he’s learned in life so far and dream about his future.  His younger sister is in 4th grade, and he’s busy teaching her how to read too.  In his words, “she’s making great progress!”

Your donations equip Joshua’s teachers with the skills they need to teach reading, give him access to books every day at school and at the Library, and help provide extracurricular activities like the GROW Program where he can discover just who it is God has created him to be.
